Goodbye Old, Hello New!

Well, I did it! I finally broke down and purchased a new laptop! Last year my mom purchased a new computer and gave me her laptop to replace my desktop that was acting crazy. I quickly fell in love with the portability, and the computer. I LOVED IT! I guess I used it too much and it has been slowly going downhill. Last week the internal battery died, and I got a short in the AC power cord. It would randomly turn off without any warning. I was able to turn it on for short periods of time, if I just didn't move it at all. I was considering purchasing a new AC adaptor and hoped that would make my nice little computer last one more year.
Today I was finishing up my 16 page research paper and it decided it wasn't going to save my work. After having a minor panic attack and calling my sweet momma, I decided I needed to break down and buy a new computer. I headed up to Best Buy, and luckily found the best little salesman who didn't try and sell me anything extra, listened to exactly what I needed and only showed me the computers in my price range. Now I am the proud owner of a new WORKING laptop! :)

Excuse me... Do I have something in my teeth?

Last week I made taco salad for dinner. I have recently discovered that I love black beans, so added them into the yummy salad. After dinner, I had to go and water my plants, and of course didn't check to see if I had anything lurking on my teeth. As I was standing there watering, I noticed that it felt like there was something stuck on my teeth. Just as I was trying to maneuver my tongue to get it out, my new neighbor had come out. Now, I was so focused on watering my plants and trying to get the thing out of my teeth, that I didn't hear him approaching. So when he said, "Hey There!" I was of course startled and just about jumped out of my skin. I quickly recovered and said hi and made polite neighborly small talk for about a minute.
Once back inside, I noticed that the "thing" that had been stuck in my teeth had so kindly freed itself from between my teeth to directly over my left front tooth, and it was the skin part of the black bean. I am sure I gave my new neighbor a great story to tell all of his family and friends about the jumpy girl next door with food hanging out on her front teeth.

Holocaust Museum

I am in amulti-cultural class this summer, and one of our class periods my professor took the class to the Dallas Holocaust museum. Here are some of my reflections:

I consider myself a well educated person, and yet it is difficult to understand the enormity of the Holocaust. I have visited Anne Frank’s house and even been to Dachau. Even with the knowledge I think I have, and my experiences, I was still unprepared for the emotions I would experience while viewing the pictures and artifacts that documented the atrocities the Jewish people endured. The story of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust came alive when I viewed the pictures and saw the sadness, depression, and hollowness in the victim’s eyes. Each picture told a portion of that person’s story.
One of the displays was a pile of shoes taken from victims of the Holocaust. The simple poem below the pile stated:
“We are the shoes, We are the last witnesses
We are the shoes from the grandchildren and grandfathers.
From Prague, Paris and Amsterdam
And because we are only made from fabric and leather
And not of blood and flesh,
Each one of us avoided the hellfire.
This poem is simplistic, yet has a meaning that is very deep. It is hard for me to comprehend that something of such little value like a shoe, was preserved for museums across the world, yet something of such value (a human life) was stolen out of hatred.
As we watched the video of the survivor I was amazed at the courage it must have taken for this sweet lady to retell her story. She mentioned that her mother and herself were taken away and then separated. When she attempted to run back to her mother, a Nazi told her to get back, that she was too young to go die in the gas chambers. At the time, I am sure this man thought he was sparing her from the inevitable torture, when in fact he caused her even greater pain knowing where her mother would be going. I could not imagine myself in that situation and what emotional turmoil that would create.
When listening as this lady tells her story, I heard many emotions in her voice. However, one emotion I did not hear was hatred. In fact, she spoke kindly of the lady who oversaw the Jewish young ladies staying in the concentration camp. She recognized that this lady was there to oversee and to enforce the rules of the camp; however she had compassion for the Jewish women who were working for her.
After the visit to the Dallas holocaust Museum, I am reminded of God’s big picture for our lives. This lady’s life was spared for a reason. I am sure that if someone had told her that many years later she would be in a formal dress, standing in front of thousands of people, accepting an award for a documentary that was made about her life story, she would laugh at the impossibility. Many times the trials that we endure seem so large and impossible. It is as if we are looking out a small window and only see the mountain that is in front of us. However, God can see the big picture and knows that this mountain we are climbing actually leads us to the most beautiful scenery we have ever seen. This lady’s story has touched the lives of people across the world. Her story will make others aware and become informed citizens working to create more peaceful relationships between humans.

Got faith?

Faith - the trust in God and in His promises as made through Christ and the Scriptures.
I am currently experiencing a few big and many small circumstances in which I am choosing to have faith that God knows exactly what He is doing, and exactly how much I can handle. It is so hard to "Let go and Let God". I like being in control, and knowing what is going on, and what is comin' around the corner. I don't like the feeling of being unprepared. It seems the last few months and especially in the last week, that I have been given multiple opportunities to test how much faith I have.
It is so much easier to give all of life's circumstances over to Him, and to let go, and have FAITH that God will lead, guide, and direct the situation.

Does Effort Count?

WARNING: MAJOR VENT SESSION!!!!
The
Ok.... I knew when I signed up to go back to school that it would be hard. I am a TERRIBLE test taker. I always have been, always will be. As a kid, I would study super duper hard, and then go to school, freeze and forget everything I had learned. I have always used this example when conferencing with parents who work so hard with their little one, and then the kiddo doesn't perform well at school. I know that by having difficulty with tests has made me a better teacher because I can relate to the child who puts forth so much effort and then fails.
That is what has happened to me 2 weeks in a row. In my theories class we are expected to read about 5-6 chapters each week and then take an online quiz (open book). WELL THEY STINK!!!! Last week, I read every word on the page. I took my time. I re-read and created mental pictures after each sub-topic. It didn't work. I got a 50% on my first quiz. So much for that study method. We had to complete a second quiz last week, and I thought I would try and outsmart the system by logging in, printing the quiz, logging out, taking the quiz un-timed, as I read the chapter, and then logging back in to "officially" complete the quiz. THAT didn't work either. It won't let you log off, so I had to panic, grab my books and start the quiz without having read. I got a 60%. This was better, but still not acceptable.
This week, I read every word in both books. Went back to re-read and take notes in the margins. I then went back and skimmed the chapters and my notes a third time. I was actually excited to take the quiz so I could show that I was putting forth the effort and making progress. WRONG!!!!!!! I spent 3 nights and one full day (18+ hours) reading and putting effort into my learning. I thought I really understood Behavior Therapy, and all the components If you would have asked me to explain it, I would have been great. BUT NOOOOOOO. I had to take another stinkin' quiz and I received another 50% to add to my failing collection. I am so frustrated because several of the answers I feel I could validate with support from my texts. AHHH!!!!
I now that this frustration is going to soften my heart and attitudes with my future students. My heart aches for the little kiddos who put forth so much effort and their progress is not showing. I would like to invite my professor to come to BISD and learn about all of the WOW, Continuous Improvement and Marzano's 9 that we are doing with our students. How come, I can be taught in the manner that I am expected and should teach my students?!?!

Copper Loves Summer!

I love how he wags his little tail while he is swimming!

Copper falling asleep with the ball in his mouth.

Copper just looooooves summer time and visiting my mom! At home, Copper is obsessed with his ball. He takes it everywhere he goes! Some say my dog is obsessive compulsive about his ball. :) Anyways... when I visit my mom in the summer, I always bring Copper. He loves her pool too! In fact, he will spend all day jumping into the pool after the ball. It is so funny to watch!

Summer

This is week 2 of summer and I have already created some really bad habits! It didn't take long before I started staying up past 2 am, sleeping in past 12 pm, eating lunch at 2, and dinner at 8 or 9 and at least one nap, as well as a trip to the pool. OH - and studying... lots and lots of studying. OK- So the studying part is not a bad habit, but it feels like it is.
You see... I had a GREAT plan. Go to bed at a normal time (11 ish) wake up around 8 ish, gym, pool, lunch, shower, and then studying / class. I would love to somehow manage to make this my summer routine. However, it will take me going to bed earlier than 2 am!

I am taking 12 hours of classes for my masters in School Counseling this summer. So far, everything is going well. I am loving my Psychology class! I find all of that stuff super interesting. I have my first Theories class on Thursday and I must admit, that I am more than a little nervous about this class. I have to write a 15 - 18 page research paper on my own personal theory. YIKES!!!!!! Also, the email from the professor said "BE PREPARED". EEEEEEK
